Project: Boundary Inspection Survey Whanganui River

Details:  This was an interesting job for us as at first inspection it could have involved a field survey lasting several weeks.  Essentially the title was in the name of a deceased man who died about 1936 after the Great Depression.  The land was deemed to be abandoned by his beneficiaries due to outstanding debts in his name and a court order at the time recorded their intention to “walk off the land."  For the intervening 70 years another party paid rates and operated the land although this was not a serious farming operation and the bulk of the land remained regenerating native bush.

When we were asked to assist, another party was interested in buying the land too, however, his surveyor’s recommendations were that the entire periphery of the block should be redefined by ground survey.  This would have been a mammoth task and could not be achieved by GPS!

We investigated the legal requirements with the assistance of Land Information NZ and discovered all that was necessary was to prove no other party had occupied the land by inspecting aerial photographs and performing a visual survey.

We contacted Wanganui Aero Works and arranged the hire of a Bell Jet Ranger II helicopter to conduct an aerial inspection survey.

Coordinates were uploaded to both the helicopter and the surveyor’s GPS and away we went.

Transit to the site was 20min flying time from Raetahi and onsite about 20min.  The scenery was spectacular at that time of year and we certainly got a thrill hovering very close to native trees and precipitous cliffs!

Navigation:  DGPS from WAW / LMS handheld GPS.

Reporting:  Video coverage & report noted findings then recommendations that boundaries be accepted as not having any noticeable "adverse occupation" & the ownership was duly transferred to the applicant.

Outcome:  Our Client was successful in warding off another buyer by opting for a more economic method of field survey & reporting
